Editing starts with the transcript

Descript combines transcription with audio and video editing. Its product site also lists recording, captions, and audio cleanup features. This makes it worth evaluating for spoken-word projects such as interviews and narrated videos, where finding a sentence can be easier than finding its position on a waveform. Test an interview, not a perfect demo

Take a recording you have permission to process. Include overlapping speakers, a specialist name, a pause, and a change of topic. First correct the transcript; then remove one digression and listen across both cut points. A grammatically tidy paragraph can still sound abrupt, or remove an important qualification from a speaker's answer.

Check captions separately from the editing transcript. Names, numbers, line breaks, and timing deserve a final viewing pass. If you use cleanup features, compare processed and original audio on headphones; less background noise is not helpful if quiet words are lost.

Plan the handoff

Export a short sample in the delivery format your colleague or publisher actually needs. Confirm resolution, audio settings, caption delivery, and whether further editing will happen in another application. Keep the original recording and an approved script outside the project so revisions can be traced.

Check current transcription allowances, collaboration permissions, and export restrictions before buying a plan. Obtain appropriate consent for recordings and any synthetic voice use; access to a feature does not grant permission to imitate someone.
