AI agents and automation tools go beyond answering questions to actually getting work done. They connect your apps, follow multi-step instructions, and can act on their own to move tasks between systems without manual effort.

Some are no-code platforms where you describe a workflow in plain language; others are developer frameworks for building custom agents. When evaluating them, weigh reliability, how much human oversight you keep, and the range of apps and actions each one can reach.

Evaluate failure and recovery

Describe a workflow as a trigger, permitted inputs, required actions, and a measurable finish condition. Test missing information, duplicate requests, and an unavailable downstream service.

Check whether the system can retry without creating duplicate records or sending the same message twice. Require a readable history of actions and a way to stop or undo work. Put approval before consequential actions such as publishing, spending money, or changing production data.

For a recurring process, compare total costs including connected services and time spent on exceptions. A workflow that succeeds only on a carefully prepared example is not ready for unattended use.
