GitHub Copilot offers AI assistance for software development, including editor assistance and agent workflows described by GitHub. It is a candidate when the team already works in the GitHub ecosystem and wants to evaluate AI within that process. Official feature overview.
Typing suggestions, conversational help, and a delegated repository task have different review costs. Test them separately. For completion, check whether accepting a suggestion preserves the surrounding assumptions. For chat, ask the assistant to point to the implementation that supports its explanation. For a repository task, require a focused diff and a reproducible check.
A useful trial is adding validation to an existing form or API. Include valid input, missing input, and an edge case. Check that the assistant does not only make the example pass while leaving inconsistent behavior elsewhere.
Confirm that your editor, language, and organization settings support the features you intend to use. Read the plan's usage limits and any paid request rules; a subscription name alone does not establish unlimited access.
Agree on which repositories and data may be used. Have the author of each change remain responsible for understanding it. Evaluate how generated tests behave when the implementation is deliberately broken: a test that also passes in the broken version adds little confidence.
Compare Cursor with the same repository task if you are considering a different coding environment. Compare a general-purpose assistant for explanation and planning only if copying context between tools is acceptable. Avoid comparing unrelated demonstrations.
A meaningful success measure: the total time from a reproducible issue to a reviewed fix, including corrections. Track regressions and reviewer effort alongside speed. This directory has not performed an independent benchmark or security audit of Copilot.
