Test it on a bounded change

Start with a small bug that has a clear reproduction and a test. Ask the assistant to explain the cause before making a change. Keep the original failure available so you can check that the proposed fix addresses it.

Review the diff for unexpected dependency changes, weakened tests, unrelated formatting, and altered error handling. Run the checks yourself and inspect any commands the agent ran. A green test suite does not establish that permissions, secrets, or data migrations were handled appropriately.

Repeat with a second task in a different part of the project. Record time spent specifying the task, waiting, reviewing, and repairing. This produces a more useful buying signal than the number of lines generated.

Costs and constraints to check

Verify which models and agent features your plan includes, how usage is metered, and whether extra usage can incur charges. Check your editor extensions, remote-development setup, and organization data requirements before moving the whole team.

For a shared project, agree on review ownership and permitted automation. Keep human approval for releases and consequential data operations. The practical advantage of an integrated environment disappears when reviewers cannot understand or reproduce its changes.

Alternative workflow

GitHub Copilot is worth comparing when your existing editor and GitHub workflow are central to the team. Run the same bug-fix exercise in both environments, using the same tests and restrictions. Do not infer a winner from product claims.

Before paying: decide whether you need suggestions while typing, assistance across files, or a longer-running agent. Evaluate the specific mode you will actually use.
